Can effective communication be reduced to a formula? Your initial reaction, much like mine, might be a resounding "No!" Communication is a complex process, influenced by numerous factors. A formula, however, can serve as a valuable tool for clarifying one's thoughts, focusing on what’s essential. For instance, leaders often send strategic messages riddled with jargon, excessive length, and abstract concepts, leaving their intended audience—typically employees—puzzled, wondering, "How does this relate to me?" and "What should I do with this?" In their book "Beyond the Babble," Bob Matha and Macy Boehm introduce what they term an "action equation": Know + Feel = Do. They argue that this formula can assist leaders (and communicators) craft messages that are concise, comprehensible, and motivate action. Let's begin with the "Do." How do we want our employees, or any target audience for that matter, to respond to our message? What specific actions or behaviors do we aim to stimulate? In short, what is the communication's purpose? This pertains to any form of communication, whether it's an email or a sweeping transformation initiative. The "Know" component of the equation fosters understanding. What facts enable your audience to grasp the rationale behind the call to action? "Know" informs the "why." However, as John Kotter and others have stressed, understanding alone does not guarantee action. This is where "Feel" comes into play. Our message should include motivational triggers, which is why stories can be so effective. When you tell a good story, you draw your audience in, creating an emotional connection that can trigger a response. The next time you craft a message, consider the equation: Know + Feel = Do. It reminds us that effective communication is more than just information transmission; it's about inspiring action. It is no secret that persuasive communication is vital to business gains. But at a time when budgets are tight, it takes on a new role. Effective persuasive communication is integral to communicating the benefits of your product or service with potential customers or clients, but is equally important inside organizations as well. Through persuasive communication, you can unite your organization around common goals, create a company culture that is inclusive, and encourage teams to collaborate—which is especially key during unsteady financial times. Persuasive communication is a process. It’s about learning who your audiences are, earning their trust, building your own empathy for their situation, and presenting a case that takes into account their interests. These skills are integral at any point, but especially during times of limited resources. Particularly inside organizations when you are fighting against widespread burnout, it can be difficult to rally colleagues and employees to your cause if they can’t see their own benefit, too. Sharing knowledge: Friday take away#1 The purpose of communication. I would like to share types of communication levels when performing a presentation or speaking to audience. The audience could be the client, supervisor, colleagues, or in organization. This is the key to engage and influent with people. Five level of communication: 1.    To Influence – As a leader, this is the highest level of communication. Speak with influence means, we change people mindset, opinion, belief, or behavior. 2.    To Persuade – This is the second high level of communication as a leader. In the context of communication, the effect of persuasive communication is when we succeed in getting people to act immediately. 3.    To Educate – the impact of “educate” communication level is your audience gain new knowledge, new understanding and able to differentiate situation, method, or processes. As a leader, this level of communication is very important because it can reflect your credibility and stimulate enlightenment of your audience. 4.    To Entertain – this type of communication level is catching and holding the audience attention with casual, humor, and fun. Usually through story-telling style. Such as sharing experience, incident or lessons learned story. 5.    To Inform – this is the lower level of communication for presentation, also known as to deliver message. This level is solely present to audience sharing information about the specific topic. For instance, sharing product knowledge with comprehensive breakdown fit or function of the product. The audience would come to understand the product physical form, function of the product and the purpose in the product package.   Communication is often described as the art of making meaning out of chaos. This means that communication is the process of taking information, ideas, and experiences that might otherwise seem disconnected or confusing and weaving them together into a coherent and meaningful whole - An essential leadership skill! At its core, communication is a process of creating a collective understanding between people. When we communicate, we bring our own ideas, thoughts, and experiences to the table, and we share them with others. We use language, gestures, and other forms of expression to convey our meaning and to create a shared understanding with those around us. The chaos in communication arises from the fact that we are all unique individuals with different experiences, perspectives, and ways of understanding the world. This means that the same message or idea can be interpreted in vastly different ways by different people, depending on their own backgrounds and experiences. Effective communication involves taking this chaos and finding ways to create shared meaning and understanding despite these differences. This might involve learning new approaches and practices, being more conscious of using clear and concise language, developing our active listening skills and becoming great at asking questions to access others' perspectives and ensure that we are all on the same page. Through this process of making meaning out of chaos, we can build connections with others, find common ground, and create shared understandings that allow us to work together effectively towards shared goals. In doing so, we can overcome the challenges and complexities of the world around us and build more meaningful relationships and collaborations. Thanks for reading!
